There are those that believe that you need the experiences of the past and present to build the future. I’m calling bullshit. If you build on the past or present you simply extend the past and present. To build the future, you must let it stand alone. You must build it on top of a whole new platform. You must create whole new segments and spawn whole new eras.
Echoing my sentiments from this morning, the disappointment in Microsoft’s inability to let go is palpable. Patrick applies this disappointment to Kinect, which I hadn’t considered a failure to innovate until I read the above post. I would wager Microsoft certainly doesn’t consider the Kinect a failure, even if it an excellent example of building on present technologies instead of creating future ones, because it was (still is?) so profitable.
In the end, Kinect is a fancy shell on top of an established paradigm instead of an entirely new paradigm. Check out Windows 8 for another example.
